Cathay Pacific welcomes liberalisation of air services between Hong Kong and Japan

4 February 2008

Cathay Pacific Airways today welcomes the agreement to substantially liberalise air services between Hong Kong and Japanese cities (except Tokyo) under which services will no longer be subject to any capacity restriction.

Cathay Pacific Chief Executive Tony Tyler said: “Cathay Pacific believes this expansion of access to Japan is an important achievement that will strengthen trade and tourism ties between the two places and further boost Hong Kong’s position as a leading international aviation hub.

“This is a significant development and we thank the Hong Kong SAR Government for their hard work. As Hong Kong’s home carrier we welcome any opportunities which may arise from the new agreement and we applaud the Government’s commitment to seek an increase in the air services between Hong Kong and Tokyo in the future.”

At Cathay Pacific, there is a long-standing wish to operate to Haneda Airport in Tokyo and also to further strengthen our services to the city’s Narita Airport. The airline thus looks forward to the next round of discussions between the Governments of Hong Kong and Japan.

Cathay Pacific has been operating scheduled passengers services to Japan since 1959. It currently serves five cities – Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka and Sapporo – operating a total of 91 passenger flights each week to Japan. The airline also operates scheduled freighter services to Tokyo and Osaka.
